Starting Lineup

Bologna focuses on controlling the middle of the pitch and playing with extreme verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on heavy pressure and rapid ball movement to overwhelm opponents. The team seeks to win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition before they can get organized.

Skorupski sits in goal behind a very aggressive and narrow defensive line. Posch and Lucumí act as the two central defenders who must play with a high line to squeeze the space. Because there are only two central defenders, they often have to step up to intercept passes or cover wide areas. They must be dominant in the air and quick to track runners to prevent long balls from getting behind them.

The midfield is the engine of Bologna. Miranda and Holm form a double pivot that shields the two central defenders. Miranda provides stability while Holm drives forward with the ball to link the play. In front of them, Pobega and Freuler operate in the half spaces to progress through the thirds. Freuler is known for his ball winning and high work rate, while Pobega connects the defensive and attacking lines. Ferguson acts as the advanced ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space to arrive late into the box.

The attack uses three forwards to pin the last defender. Castro leads the line as a pressing centre-forward who works to harass the opposition back line. On the flanks, Orsolini and Domínguez act as wide wingers who stretch the defence. Orsolini looks to cut inside to shoot, while Domínguez can pull wide to deliver crosses. This front three moves in combination to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, which allows Bologna to dominate possession in the central zones. The high press from Ferguson, Castro, and the wide attackers can trigger a press that forces a long ball. This setup also creates wide overloads when the midfielders push high to support the wingers.
