Leeds Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Perri · Rodon · Strujik · Bornauw · Nmecha · Okafor · Stach · Longstaff · Bogle · Gudmunsson (or Harrison) · GnontoLeeds aims to win the ball back high up the pitch through a high press in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to exploit transitions and strike quickly before the opposition can reset. The team uses the presence of three attackers to force the opposition into mistakes and play through the lines with direct movement.
Perri protects the goal while the defensive unit stays compact. Rodon sits in the center of the back five to win the header and clear the lines when under pressure. Bornauw and Strujik play as the side center-backs to cover the space and step up to intercept passes. Bogle and Gudmunsson operate as attacking wing backs to provide width. Bogle will overlap the winger to provide width on the right, while Gudmunsson pushes up on the left to stretch the defence and provide crossing options.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Stach and Longstaff working in tandem. Stach stays deeper to shield the defence and protect the center. Longstaff is tasked to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the front three. They work to press in a mid-block to deny the turn of opposition midfielders. By working in pairs, they can squeeze the space and win the second ball in the center of the park to recycle possession.
Up front, Nmecha acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line. He works to hold up the ball and link up play with the wide players. Okafor and Gnonto operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. Gnonto can hit in behind on the transition to exploit high lines. Okafor will pull wide to create passing lanes and look to deliver early crosses or cut it back to the runners who arrive late into the box.
A primary advantage of this Leeds lineup is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Bogle and Gudmunsson. The central trio of Rodon, Bornauw, and Strujik provides compactness when defending against a single striker. Additionally, the team can hit in behind on the transition due to the pace of the front three and the ability of the wing backs to push high.
This 5-2-3 formation is a high energy system built for pressing and quick counter attacks. It works best against opponents who play with a high line and struggle to handle rapid transitions or wide overloads.
