Richard plays as an attacking ten behind the two forwards, acting as the link between the midfield and the attack. Richard is tasked to find space between the lines and play through the lines to find the strikers. This midfield group works to compress the space in the middle to prevent opponents from playing through the center.

In the attacking phase, Portugal utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Kike and Kelvin lead the line, looking to work in combinations to stretch the defense. Kelvin operates as a mobile striker who can run in behind, while Kike looks to hold up the ball and lay it off to oncoming runners. The wing backs, Uva and Torrelles, provide width by overlapping the front two to create crosses into the box. This creates a system where the team can attack in numbers during transitions, often using the runs of Richard to support the strike duo.
