Southampton Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Bazunu (Mccarthy / Long) · Stephens (Quarshie / Wood) · Roerslev (Bree) · Harwood-Bellis (Edwards) · Manning (Wellington / Taylor) · Downes (Sesay) · Charles (Smallbone) · Matsuki (Aribo) · Fraser (Armstrong) · Robinson (Edozie / Diaz) · Downs (Archer / Stewart)Southampton look to dominate space and win the ball back high up the pitch through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to play with a high press and heavy verticality when moving forward. The team seeks to squeeze the space in the opposition half and use quick transitions to catch opponents out of position.
Bazunu sits between the posts to anchor the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three with Downes playing as the central defender to sweep behind the high line. Harwood-Bellis acts as the right centre back and Stephens sits as the left centre back to hold the line. Roerslev operates as an attacking wing back on the right while Manning plays as the left wing back to provide width. The defenders must be ready to step up and play out from the back to keep the ball moving.
The midfield operates as a double pivot consisting of Charles and Matsuki. Matsuki works to connect the defensive and attacking lines while Charles helps to shield the defence and win the second ball. These two players must press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines. They serve as the engine room to recycle possession and move the ball into the final third.
In the attacking phase, Southampton deploy three attackers across the front. Downs acts as the pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and lead the line. Robinson and Fraser play as wide wingers who look to stretch the defence and isolate the opponent in one on one situations. Fraser prefers to cut inside from the right while Robinson pulls wide on the left to create space for others to arrive late into the box.
This formation provides significant tactical advantages through wide overloads when Roerslev and Manning push high. The team can also achieve numerical superiority in midfield during certain phases of play. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows Southampton to win the ball in dangerous areas.
Southampton use this setup to force a long ball from the opposition and exploit the space left behind. This 5-2-3 is best suited for games against teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
