Harwood-Bellis and Stephens act as the core of the line, looking to win headers and clear the lines when under heavy pressure. Roerslev and Manning must track back quickly to cover the wide areas, while the two central defenders hold a steady line to keep the team compact.

The midfield works as a dense block to control the center of the pitch. Downes and Charles form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Downes working to intercept play and Charles providing a physical presence to win the second ball. In front of them, Azaz operates as a central midfielder to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Robinson and Fellows push higher into the half spaces to support the attack, providing extra cover when the team needs to press in a mid-block.

Southampton relies on Downs as a lone striker to lead the line. Downs must work hard to hold up the ball and wait for support from the attacking midfielders. Robinson and Fellows operate as wide midfielders who can cut inside to create chances or push high to support the striker. The goal is to use the work of the midfielders to drive the ball forward quickly, looking for Downs to run in behind or link up play with the late runners arriving into the box.

One major advantage of this 4-5-1 lineup is the ability to maintain extreme compactness when defending.
