Starting Lineup

Williams · Lunga · Lebusa · Cupido · Mndunyelwa · Modiba · Mokoena · Morena · Sales · Mothiba · Shalulile

Sundowns aim to play with high intensity and directness. This 5-2-3 formation is built to press from the front and win the ball high up the pitch. The team looks to break quickly to catch the opposition out of position.

Williams guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back five consists of Mokoena, Cupido, and Lebusa in a central line. Mokoena holds the line while Cupido and Lebusa cover the space behind the wing backs. Mndunyelwa and Lunga play as attacking wing backs who provide the main width for the team. They can overlap the winger to create overloads or track back to defend zonally when the team drops into a mid-block.

The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of Modiba and Morena. These two players work to protect the defensive unit and control the tempo. Modiba often drops between the centre-backs to receive the ball and play short from the back to progress through the thirds. Morena works to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive lines to the attackers. They aim to compress the midfield to deny the turn of opposition playmakers.

Up front, the team uses three attackers in Sales, Mothiba, and Shalulile. Sales and Shalulile act as wide attackers who can cut inside to create space for the wing backs. Mothiba plays as a pressing centre-forward, using his strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. This movement allows the wingers to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box. The team builds play by finding the feet of the striker before looking to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Mndunyelwa and Lunga. The five defenders also ensure the team can hold a compact block and defend man-to-man when required. This flexibility allows Sundowns to switch play quickly and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a balance between a strong defensive foundation and high speed attacking intent. This formation is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line and are vulnerable to being hit in behind.
