Valencia Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gayà · Santamaria · Copete · Tárrega · Duro · D. López · Danjuma · Almeida · Pepelu · Guerra · AgirrezabalaValencia relies on extreme central dominance to dictate play using a 2-5-3. This formation is built to play with high intensity and keep the ball in the opposition half. The lineup seeks to overwhelm the middle of the pitch to create constant pressure.
Agirrezabala acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very narrow defensive unit. The defense features only two central defenders, Copete and Tárrega, who must play a high line to squeeze the space. Since there are only two defenders, Copete and Tárrega must be ready to cover wide areas and act as ball playing defenders to play short from the back. They need to be ready to step up to set the offside trap and manage the large space behind them.
The midfield contains five players to control the center of the pitch. A double pivot of Gayà and Santamaria sits deep to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Pepelu and Guerra act as two tens in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Pepelu and Guerra look to carry the ball forward and drive into the final third. Almeida plays as an attacking ten to find the feet of the striker and play through the lines. This midfield unit allows Valencia to recycle possession and control the tempo.
The attacking front consists of three players working in close proximity. Duro operates as a lone striker who must hold up the ball and press from the front. On the flanks, Danjuma and D. López act as wide wingers who aim to stretch the defense. Danjuma and D. López often cut inside to create central overloads and allow for more passing options. The goal is to use combinations to hit in behind on the transition or find space through quick passing.
This formation provides clear tactical advantages, specifically numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the center allows the team to bypass the midfield of the opposition easily. The formation also creates wide overloads when the midfielders move into advanced positions. This allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack quickly.
The 2-5-3 is an aggressive formation designed to dominate possession. It is best used when facing an opponent that sits deep in a low block.
