Aston Villa Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Martínez · Romero · Pau Torres · Ollie Watkins · Maatsen · McGinn · Llorente · Maddison · Malen · Diaby · MukieleAston Villa focuses on a high press and rapid transitions in a 4-5-1. This lineup works to control the middle of the pitch and win the ball back high up the pitch. They seek to squeeze the space in the central zone to force the opposition into making mistakes.
Martínez stays on the line to act as a shot stopper. Mukiele defends the right flank while Maatsen covers the left in a flat back four. Pau Torres plays as a ball playing defender to help build play from the back, while Romero stays close to him to win headers and act as a defender dominant in the air. A high line is held to keep the distance between the defense and midfield small.
A double pivot of McGinn and Llorente provides the base in midfield. McGinn uses his high pressing intensity to win it back high up the pitch and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Llorente works to shield the defense and recycle possession when the team needs to slow the game down. Maddison plays as the central link, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to the attackers.
Ollie Watkins leads the line as a lone striker, working to pin the last defender and find the feet of his teammates. Malen and Diaby operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders. Malen tends to cut inside from the left, while Diaby stays wide to stretch the defense. They look to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box to support Watkins in the central area.
The formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves using the midfield five. This creates heavy pressure on the opponent's build up and forces mistakes. Speed of transition also helps the team when they win the ball back. They can quickly switch play to Diaby or Malen to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a compact block that is difficult to break down centrally. It works best against teams that dominate possession but leave space behind their midfield on the transition.
