Portugal plays a very compact game based on a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the opposition to make a mistake before hitting them on the break. The goal is to deny space in the middle and force the opponent to play wide where they can be contained.

The midfield is a dense five man unit that aims to control the center of the pitch. André and Jaime Pacheco form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. André acts as the anchor to protect the center backs, while Jaime Pacheco looks to tackle and break up play. In front of them, Jaime Magalhães, Carlos Manuel, and Futre occupy the half spaces. Carlos Manuel and Futre link the defensive and attacking lines, with Jaime Magalhães able to arrive late into the box to support the attack. This formation allows Portugal to squeeze the space between the lines.

Up top, the team relies on a lone striker, Fernando Gomes, to lead the line. Fernando Gomes acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to push forward. He must press the opposition back line to force a long ball. When the team wins the ball, the attack moves quickly through the center and out to the flanks. Futre and the wide midfielders look to create runs in behind the defense to exploit gaps. The movement is designed to create combinations in tight spaces near the edge of the area.

The main advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having five players in the center, Portugal can easily congest the passing lanes and make it hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition when moving from defense to attack. The team can quickly switch play to the wings to use the width provided by the full backs or the wide midfielders.
