A defensively solid identity defines Arema as they play a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to commit men forward before striking on the break. The goal is to maintain compactness to deny space between the lines.

Dareis acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit employs a back five to cover the width of the pitch. Januari, Hendrianto, and Fizi form the central trio, where they work to win headers and clear the lines. Nurdin and Andri play as attacking wing backs, tasked with tracking back to form a flat five when defending and pushing high to provide width when the ball moves forward. These defenders work to hold a narrow defensive block to protect the central area.

In front of the back five, a flat midfield four provides a screen. Robie sits as the single pivot to shield the defense and protect the center backs. Faisol, Jamal, and Abenk occupy the remaining spaces to press in a mid-block and win the second ball. Robie looks to recycle possession and find the midfielders, while Faisol and Abenk work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This midfield unit must stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

The attacking play relies on Mulyadi as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball and fight for long balls to allow the rest of the team to move up the pitch. Because the team uses a single striker, much of the attacking threat comes from the wing backs, Nurdin and Andri, who look to overlap the midfielders. Mulyadi will often act as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opponent out of position.

This formation offers significant advantages through its compactness when defending. By keeping the lines close, Arema makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Nurdin and Andri push forward, forcing the opposition to drop deep. This also allows for quick speed of transition once the ball is won back in the middle of the pitch.

The 5-4-1 formation is a specialist tool for a team that wants to absorb pressure and strike quickly. This lineup is best suited for matches against dominant sides that control much of the possession.
