Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Raya · Gabriel · Saliba · Timber · MLS · Zubimendi · Rice · Martinelli · Ødegaard · Trossard · GyökeresArsenal aims to play a high press and vertical game with this 4-2-4 formation. The lineup is built to stretch the opposition defense by using a heavy front line to pin the backline high up the pitch. This setup creates immediate pressure in the final third to win the ball back high up the pitch.
Raya sits between the posts to act as a sweeper behind a high line. The back four functions as a zonal line where Timber plays as a defensive wing back to cover the right flank. Gabriel and Saliba form a central pairing of dominant in the air defenders who step up to play the offside trap. MLS operates on the left to provide balance while the central defenders focus on covering the space behind them.
A double pivot manages the middle of the park to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Zubimendi works to shield the defense and receives on the half-turn to start the build up. Rice acts as a carrier who drives forward with the ball to break the line. This midfield pairing is tasked to compress the midfield and ensure the team can recycle possession when the front four are marked out of the game.
The attacking unit utilizes two forwards in a partnership with two wide players. Gyökeres acts as a pressing centre-forward who uses his strength to hold up the ball. Ødegaard plays as a second striker in the hole to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines. Martinelli and Trossard play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the full backs. They look to hit in behind on the transition and deliver early crosses to the central attackers.
Arsenal can gain a massive advantage through wide overloads when the full backs overlap the winger. The presence of four attackers allows the team to press in pairs to force a long ball from the opponent. This formation also provides speed of transition to catch teams before they can sit deep.
This 4-2-4 formation relies on aggressive pressing and verticality to overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for matches where Arsenal needs to pin a low block back and win the ball high up the pitch.
