Starting Lineup
Gyökeres/Havertz/Jesus (CF) · Barcola/Trossard (LW) · Saka/Madueke (RW) · Ødegaard/Nwaneri/Dowman (AM) · Rice/Wharton (CM/DM) · Zubimendi/Éderson (CM/DM) · Hincapié/MLS (LB) · Gabriel/Calafiori (CB) · Saliba/Mosquera (CB) · Timber/White (RB) · Raya/Kepa (GK)Arsenal looks to dominate through heavy possession and high pressing with a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the ball and pin the opponent in their own half by using vertical passing to break lines. The goal is to maintain a high level of control through a strong midfield presence while keeping the defensive unit high up the pitch.
Raya acts as the goalkeeper, playing a key role in playing short from the back to start attacks. The back line functions as a flat back four, with Saliba acting as a ball playing defender who can cover the space behind the line. Gabriel provides physical presence and strength in the air at left centre back, while Timber and Hincapié operate as full backs to provide width. Saliba and Gabriel work to defend zonally and hold the line against direct attacks.
The midfield is a three man midfield with a carrier and a creative spark. Zubimendi sits in a single pivot role to shield the defence and recycle possession. Rice plays as an inverted eight, driving forward with the ball to connect the lines and win the second ball in the middle of the park. Ødegaard operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding spaces between the lines to create chances with his vision and passing range.
In the attacking phase, Arsenal utilizes three attackers across the front. Barcola and Saka play as wide wingers, with Saka often cutting inside to create goalscoring opportunities. Gyökeres acts as a pressing centre forward, holding up the ball and making runs in behind to stretch the defence. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the midfield to regain possession high up the pitch.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to create numerical superiority in midfield and wide overloads. By having Saka and Barcola stretch the play, the team can create space for Rice and Ødegaard to operate in the half spaces. The high press works in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press that squeezes the space in the opponent's defensive third.
Arsenal uses this 4-3-3 to exert total control over matches through high ball retention. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that sit deep and try to defend in a low block.
