Peñarol aims to control the center of the pitch through a high press and direct transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to dominate the middle of the park and use high intensity to win the ball back in advanced areas. By squeezing the space in the center, the team intends to force opponents into mistakes before hitting them on the break.

Gianluigi Buffon starts in goal to command the area and organize the defensive line. The back three consists of Alessandro Nesta, Lilian Thuram, and Fabio Cannavaro. Nesta and Cannavaro act as central defenders who are dominant in the air and able to cover space behind the midfield. Thuram plays as a wide centre-back, providing physical strength and the ability to step up into the midfield. This unit works together to maintain a high line and secure the area against through balls.

The midfield utilizes a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative engine. Captain Paolo Maldini sits in the defensive midfield role to shield the defense and mark runners. Beside him, Cafu and Damien Almeyda work to win the second ball and drive forward with the ball. Paulo Sousa connects the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. Zinedine Zidane operates as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and create chances with his passing range.

In the attacking phase, Peñarol uses two forwards in a partnership. Roberto Baggio plays as a second striker in the hole, dropping into spaces to link up play between the lines. Ronaldo works as the main striker, using his pace and dribbling style to run in behind the defense. The team builds the attack by spreading wide with the midfielders to stretch the defense, before Zinedine Zidane finds the feet of the striker or plays a through ball to split the defense.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield to control the tempo of the game. The presence of highly mobile players allows for a rapid speed of transition when the ball is won high up the pitch. Peñarol can also use the wide central defenders to create overloads in the half spaces, making them difficult to mark in tight spaces.

This 3-5-2 setup relies on a dominant midfield to dictate play and sustain pressure. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a narrow formation and can be broken down with quick vertical movement.
