Peñarol plays with a clear intention to dominate the ball and control the center of the pitch through a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a heavy possession based game where control of the middle allows the team to dictate the tempo. By using a dense midfield, Peñarol aims to keep the ball and use technical superiority to move the opponent around.

The defensive unit begins with A. Nesta in goal, acting as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, a back three provides a solid base with L. Thuram as the right center back, F. Cannavaro as the left center back, and A. Nesta also positioned as a center back to lead the line. Cannavaro and Thuram provide strength in the air and ability to cover space, while the central defender holds the line. This unit functions as a compact block that can shift side to side to prevent gaps.

In the center of the pitch, Peñarol employs a five man midfield that dominates the ball. P. Maldini (C) acts as the captain and sits in the defensive midfield to shield the back three, while Cafu provides energy as a deep lying playmaker to move the ball from deep. The midfield contains a mix of runners and creators, with M. Almeyda and P. Sousa operating in the central spaces to win the second ball and connect the defense to the attack. Z. Zidane operates as an attacking ten behind the strikers, using his passing range to split the defense with through balls and create chances.

The attacking line utilizes a partnership of two forwards to stretch the opposition. Ronaldo operates as a striker who can use his pace to run in behind, while R. Baggio works as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines. This duo creates constant movement, with Ronaldo looking to find the feet of the striker and Baggio looking to arrive late into the box. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the midfield to reclaim possession high up the pitch.

A major advantage for Peñarol is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. The team can also use the technical ability of Z. Zidane to control the tempo and create overloads in the central areas. Furthermore, the speed of transition when the ball is won allows the front two to immediately attack space before the opponent can set the offside trap.

This formation relies on high technical ability and central control to suffocate the opposition. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play through the middle or against opponents that struggle to handle intense central pressure.
