Peñarol focuses on a vertical style of play through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the center of the pitch while using high intensity to win the ball back quickly. The goal is to move the ball through the middle of the field to catch the opponent out of position.

G. Buffon guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of A. Nesta, L. Thuram, and F. Cannavaro. A. Nesta acts as the central presence, using his reading of the game to intercept passes and cover space. F. Cannavaro and L. Thuram provide strength and cover on either side of him. The back line will step up to catch the opposition offside and play out from the back when necessary.

The midfield is built around a central engine room designed to control the tempo. P. Maldini (C) acts as the captain and sits in the deep position to shield the defense and recycle possession. Cafu operates alongside him to provide energy and cover the wide areas. P. Sousa and M. Almeyda play in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Z. Zidane plays as the attacking ten behind the strikers. Z. Zidane uses his passing range to play through the lines and find the forwards.

Peñarol uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Ronaldo operates as the primary threat with his explosive pace and dribbling to run in behind the defense. R. Baggio plays as a second striker in the hole, dropping into midfield to link up play and create space for others. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. This attacking duo relies on quick combinations and movement to pull the defenders out of position.

This formation offers significant advantages due to its heavy presence in the center. Peñarol creates numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The ability to press in a mid-block allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. By having five players in the middle, the team can squeeze the space and deny the opponent time on the ball.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a heavy central presence and high pressing capabilities. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to dominate possession and control the rhythm against a mid-block opponent.
