River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Armani · Portillo · Rivero · Montiel · Martínez Quarta · Colidio · Salas · Driussi · Lencina · Galoppo · SubiabreRiver seeks to control the center of the pitch by utilizing a 3-5-2. This formation is built to dominate the middle and dictate the tempo of the game through a crowded midfield. By packing the central areas, the team can control how play moves and ensure they are always ready to react to the opponent.
Armani stays in goal to lead the defensive unit. The back line functions as a back three with Montiel, Martínez Quarta, and Rivero. Martínez Quarta acts as a ball playing defender to play out from the back, while Montiel and Rivero stay narrow to cover the central spaces. They work together to hold the line and step up to intercept any balls played through the middle.
The midfield consists of five players who work to control the rhythm of the game. Galoppo and Portillo sit as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Lencina, Driussi, and Subiabre work to connect the lines. Subiabre and Lencina push into the half spaces to spread the play, while Driussi moves between the lines to find space. This grouping helps River to compress the midfield and win it back high up the pitch.
Up front, the team uses a partnership of two forwards with Colidio and Salas. Colidio works as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front and force the opposition back. Salas works to hold up the ball and lay it off to the incoming midfielders. They use combinations to break the line, often looking for runs in behind the defense or a cutback from the wide areas. The two forwards focus on pinning the last defender to create room for the midfield to arrive late into the box.
One major advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. Having five midfielders allows the team to squeeze the space and make it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Another strength is the ability to switch play quickly through the wide midfielders to stretch the defence. The back three also provides a solid base to defend against counter attacks at pace.
The 3-5-2 formation provides a heavy central presence that makes the team very difficult to play through. It is best used against opponents that try to play through the middle rather than using the wings.
