Tottenham Football Formation

Creation DateSeptember 1, 2025

Starting Lineup

Austin · Drăgușin · Danso · DJ Spence · Gray · Bentancur · Bissouma · Maddison · Richarlson · Kulusevski · Solanke

Tottenham looks to dominate the pitch through a high press and lightning fast transitions in this 4-2-4 lineup. This formation is built to pin the opposition back and create chaos in their defensive line by committing many bodies forward. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to hit in behind to catch the opponent out of position.

Austin stays between the posts to anchor the defense. The back four operates with Gray at right back and DJ Spence at left back, with both players looking to push up and support the attack as attacking wing backs. Drăgușin and Danso form the central pairing, where Drăgușin can step up to intercept while Danso provides cover and wins headers. They must hold a high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact when they lose possession.

A double pivot consisting of Bissouma and Bentancur controls the middle of the pitch. Bissouma uses his high pressing intensity and tackling to win the ball back in the middle third and disrupt play. Bentancur acts as the link, carrying the ball forward and playing through the lines to find the attackers with his passing range. They must work together to shield the back four and ensure they do not get bypassed during quick transitions.

The front four of Kulusevski, Maddison, Solanke, and Richarlson provides immense pressure on the opponent. Kulusevski and Richarlson act as wide players, with Kulusevski often cutting inside to create overloads in the central areas. Maddison plays in the hole as a shadow striker to provide vision and key passes, while Solanke acts as the central figure to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. They press from the front in pairs to force a long ball and win the second ball.

This lineup offers great speed of transition and allows Tottenham to overwhelm opponents in the final third. By using four dedicated attackers, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations and create constant threat. The coordination in the high press can also trigger a press that makes it very difficult for the opposition to play out from the back or progress through the thirds.

The 4-2-4 is a heavy attacking formation designed to punish teams that lack defensive compactness. It is best used when chasing a game or against opponents that struggle to defend against high intensity pressure.
