Accrington Football Formation
Starting Lineup
UN · B · C · D · E · F · G · H · IO · J · KAccrington focus on a direct and high pressing style of play using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly through the central channels. The goal is to use width and intensity to stretch the opposition before hitting them on the transition.
UN operates as the lone goalkeeper in front of a back five. The defensive unit consists of B, F, and E in a central trio, with D acting as a right wing back and C playing as a left wing back. B, F, and E defend zonally to protect the middle, while B acts as the anchor. D and C push high to provide width, which allows the central defenders to cover the space behind them. When the team sits deep, the wing backs drop to create a flat back five, but they often step up to support the attack.
The midfield works as a double pivot consisting of H and G. These two players are tasked with sitting in front of the back three to shield the defence. H and G must track runners and win the second ball to keep the play moving. They act as the link between the back line and the front three, often receiving the ball to recycle possession or playing simple passes to bypass the opposition press. Their main job is to keep the middle compact and ensure the team is not caught out when the wing backs push forward.
The attacking line uses three players to pin the opposition back. K leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to find the feet of his teammates or run in behind. IO and J operate as wide attackers, with IO cutting inside from the left and J looking to get to the byline on the right. This creates a variety of movements, such as K making runs to pull defenders away, allowing IO or J to find space in the box. The front three press from the front to force long balls and win possession in dangerous areas.
Accrington gain a significant advantage through their ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using K, IO, and J to squeeze the space, they can force errors near the opponent's goal. The formation also offers width overloads when D and C overlap the wingers, creating two on one situations. This allows the team to stretch the defence and create openings for through balls.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick verticality to disrupt the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
