Liverpool aims for a high press and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3. The Reds focus on winning the ball high up the pitch to strike before the opponent can get organized. This formation is built to dominate the middle third and pin the opposition back with constant pressure.

Alisson starts in goal, acting as a sweeping goalkeeper to cover the high line. The defensive unit relies on a narrow pairing of Gravenberch and van Dijk. van Dijk uses his aerial strength and positioning to lead the line, while Gravenberch must step up to intercept through balls. They must also hold the line to prevent any direct balls from getting through.

The midfield uses five players to ensure control of the center. Kerkez and Frimpong act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai play as central midfielders to connect the defense and the attack, with Mac Allister using his passing range to break the line. Wirtz operates as an attacking ten in the hole, looking to receive the ball in the half spaces and create chances. This midfield density allows the team to recycle possession and squeeze the space in the middle.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Isak acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and link play. Salah plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and find goal scoring opportunities, while Chiesa plays on the left to pull wide. The attacking unit works to create combinations in tight spaces and make runs in behind. They look to hit in behind on the transition and use the movement of the forwards to isolate defenders one on one.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team also creates wide overloads when the midfielders push high to support the attack. This allows the Reds to press in coordinated waves and win the ball back high up the pitch. The ability to compress the midfield makes it very difficult for the other team to find passing lanes.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high intensity system designed for total dominance. It is best suited for matches against opponents that try to play out from the back.
