RB Leipzig Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Raum · Klostermann · Lukeba · Orban · Werner · Nusa · Baumgartner · Bakayoko · Schlager · Seiwald · GulacsiRB Leipzig aims to play with a heavy high press and lightning fast transitions. This is achieved through a 2-5-3 formation that prioritizes overwhelming the opponent in the final third. The lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately hurt the opposition before they can organize.
Gulacsi starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The defensive line consists of a back two with Lukeba and Orban acting as the central defenders. Orban provides aerial strength while Lukeba works as a ball playing defender to play short from the back. Because this formation uses only two center backs, they must step up to squeeze the space and maintain a high line to catch attackers offside.
The midfield is a heavy five man unit that dominates the central areas. Raum and Klostermann act as the deep defensive pivots to shield the two center backs. Seiwald and Schlager operate as the two central midfielders, where Seiwald works to intercept passes and Schlager looks to carry the ball forward. Baumgartner plays as the attacking ten, sitting in the hole to connect the midfield to the front three and arrive late into the box.
Up front, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back line. Werner acts as a pressing centre forward, constantly working to trigger a press from the front. Nusa operates as a wide winger on the left, while Bakayoko plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create space for others. The movement of these three players is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations.
RB Leipzig gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having five players in the midfield, they can easily control the tempo and recycle possession. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielder to force a long ball from the opponent.
This aggressive formation is designed to dominate games through high intensity and verticality. It is best suited for facing teams that try to build play from the back and struggle under heavy pressure.
