Starting Lineup

Marseille look to control games through a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. Rulli operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three where Medina acts as the left centre-back and Pavard plays as the right centre-back. Balerdi sits in the middle to anchor the defense, using his ability to play out from the back to start attacks. Pavard provides physical presence and can step up to intercept passes, while Medina covers the space behind the wing backs. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

The midfield works as a central block designed to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. Højbjerg acts as the primary engine in the central midfield, using his high work rate to press aggressively and win the second ball. Beside him, Vermeeren connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball and looking to progress through the thirds. Emerson and Murillo occupy the wide areas, providing the necessary width to help the team move from a mid-block into an attacking phase.

In the attacking phase, Marseille use three attackers to pin the last defender. Gouiri acts as the lone striker, holding up the ball to allow teammates to join the attack. On the flanks, Paixão and Greenwood act as wide wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring opportunities. Greenwood uses his dribbling style to take on defenders, while Paixão looks to find space in the pockets. This front line works to press from the front, forcing the opposition into mistakes and creating runs in behind.

One major advantage for Marseille is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Emerson and Murillo. This forces the opposition to defend much larger areas of the pitch. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the central areas when Højbjerg and Vermeeren combine to win possession and immediately transition into attack.
