This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and strike opponents on the transition. The team looks to win the ball and quickly move it forward to exploit the spaces left behind the opposition defensive line. By keeping the unit compact, Legia can squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch and force the opposition to play wide or attempt long balls.
Strebinger stands between the posts to command his area and organize the back line. Within the defensive unit, a narrow defensive block is formed with Sokołowski acting as the central anchor to hold the line. Jedrzejczyk and Rose provide cover and depth as part of a back three. On the flanks, Johanson and Mladenovic act as attacking wing backs to provide width when the team is in possession. Johanson and Mladenovic must track back quickly to maintain the five man line when possession is lost. Jedrzejczyk and Rose focus on winning the header and dominating in the air to clear the lines during set pieces and crosses.
A double pivot manages the midfield to control the center and shield the back three. Kharatin and Josue sit in front of the defenders to provide protection. Kharatin works to intercept passes and disrupt the opposition play while Josue drives forward with the ball to connect the lines. Josue utilizes his passing range to find the attackers quickly and break the line with through balls. This pairing works to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the center of the pitch.
The attack uses three attackers to stretch the opposition defense and create scoring opportunities. Pekhart acts as a target man to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates in tight spaces. Ivi Lopez and Kastrati operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances. Ivi Lopez uses his dribbling style to beat his marker while Kastrati looks to get to the byline and whip it in. Such movement creates runs in behind and allows the wingers to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
This formation offers significant compactness when defending in a mid-block. The presence of three center backs provides extra security against long balls and aerial threats in the box. Legia can also create wide overloads by having Johanson and Mladenovic push high up the pitch alongside the wingers. This allows the team to switch play and find space in the half spaces during the transition.
The 5-2-3 lineup is a powerful tool for a team that wants to play on the counter at pace. This formation works best against opponents that push a high line and leave gaps in the wide areas.
