Milan looks to play with a high press and rapid verticality through a 4-4-2. This formation aims to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately use the speed of the forwards to punish the opposition. By playing this way, the team seeks to stretch the defence and exploit spaces behind the back line.

M. Maignan operates between the posts to organize the back line and sweep behind the high line when needed. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four with P. Estupinan and Z. Athekame acting as the wide defenders. P. Estupinan is expected to overlap the winger to provide width, while Z. Athekame provides cover on the right. F. Tomori and K. De Winter form the central pairing, with F. Tomori acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back and K. De Winter providing aerial strength and physical presence to defend zonally.

The midfield setup uses a three-man midfield with a carrier and a sitting midfielder to control the center. A. Jashari acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. To his side, A. Rabiot and R. Loftus-Cheek operate in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. R. Loftus-Cheek uses his driving runs to carry the ball forward, while A. Rabiot helps to press in a mid-block. C. Nkunku sits just ahead of them as an attacking ten, looking to find the feet of the strikers or arrive late into the box to score.

The attack relies on two forwards in a partnership to lead the press from the front. R. Leao plays as a lone striker who can also drift wide to isolate a one on one, using his dribbling style to beat defenders. C. Pulisic plays as the second striker in the hole or as a right sided attacker, cutting inside to create goal scoring chances. They work to pin the last defender and make runs in behind to hit the opposition on the transition. This duo uses their pace to break quickly once the ball is recovered by the midfield.

Milan offers great speed of transition when moving from a defensive block into attack. The presence of R. Leao and C. Pulisic allows for immediate verticality to hit in behind on the transition. Additionally, the team creates wide overloads when P. Estupinan and Z. Athekame push up to support the midfield. This setup allows the team to compress the midfield and squeeze the space when the opponent has the ball.

This 4-4-2 formation is built to overwhelm opponents with high intensity and quick direct play. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to defend against rapid counter attacks.
