Starting Lineup
Vicario (Austin) · Porro (Cassanova) · Romero (Danso) · Van de Ven (Davies) · Spence (Udogie) · Palhinha (Gray) · Sarr (Bentancur / Olusesi) · Simons (Bergvall / Kyerematen) · Kudus (Johnson) · Richarlison (Odobert) · Kolo Muani (Solanke / Tel)Tottenham plays with high intensity to win it back high up the pitch, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to catch opponents in transition and strike quickly when they lose possession. The goal is to maintain a fast pace and force the opposition into mistakes through direct play.
Vicario operates as the goalkeeper to command his area and make saves. The defensive unit uses a back five with Porro acting as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width. On the left, Spence plays as an attacking wing back to push high up the pitch. In the center, Palhinha, Romero, and Van de Ven form a solid line. Romero uses his aggression to tackle and mark attackers, while Van de Ven uses his recovery speed to cover the space when the line steps up. Palhinha works to win the second ball and clear the lines.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the central areas. Sarr and Simons are responsible for connecting the defensive and attacking lines. While Sarr is able to carry the ball forward to drive the team into the attacking third, Simons works to recycle possession and play through the lines. They must press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the thirds and work to squeeze the space between the lines.
The attack features three players to pressure the opposition back line. Kolo Muani plays as a pressing centre-forward to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Richarlison and Kudus occupy the wide areas to stretch the defence. To create chances, Richarlison looks to cut inside, and Kudus uses his dribbling to beat defenders and deliver early crosses. They aim to hit in behind on the transition to create scoring opportunities.
Tottenham gains a significant advantage through the wide overloads created by the wing backs. Having Porro and Spence push high allows the team to spread wide and create space. The recovery speed of Van de Ven also allows the team to set the offside trap and play with a high line. This creates the ability to press in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch.
This 5-2-3 formation is designed for rapid attacking and high pressing. It is most effective when facing teams that leave space behind their defenders and can be caught on the break.
