Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Unai Simón · Aymeric Laporte · Dani Vivian · Jesús Areso · Aitor Paredes · Mikel Jauregizar · Oihan Sancet · Nico Williams · Iñaki Williams · Álex Berenguer · Beñat PradosAthletic looks to play with high intensity and rapid transitions using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the opposition and pin the defense back with aggressive forward movements. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and move it quickly to the wide areas to catch the opponent out of position.
Unai Simón plays behind a flat back four that works to maintain a high line to squeeze the space. Aymeric Laporte and Dani Vivian act as the central pair, where Laporte uses his ball playing ability to start attacks and Vivian provides aerial strength. Jesús Areso operates as an attacking full back to provide width, while Aymeric Laporte shifts to the left to cover the flank. The defensive unit must remain compact to prevent being caught out when the full backs push forward.
The midfield works as a double pivot to provide stability in the center of the pitch. Mikel Jauregizar and Beñat Prados are tasked with controlling the tempo and shielding the defensive line. One of them will often drop deep to receive the ball from the center backs, while the other looks to drive forward to connect the lines. They must work hard to intercept passes and win the second ball to keep the momentum going for Athletic.
In the attacking third, the team utilizes four forwards to create constant pressure. Nico Williams and Iñaki Williams act as wide wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal, while also looking to isolate defenders in one on one situations. Oihan Sancet and Álex Berenguer occupy the central spaces as a forward partnership. They focus on making runs in behind the defense and using combinations to break the line. The front four press the opposition back line aggressively to force a long ball.
This lineup offers significant advantages through wide overloads and high pressing. By using the full backs and wingers together, Athletic can create numerical superiority on the flanks. The ability to press in coordinated waves also makes it difficult for opponents to build play from the back. When they win the ball, the speed of transition allows them to attack before the opposition can settle into a defensive block.
This 4-2-4 formation is designed for a high octane game centered on direct attacking and width. It is best suited for matches where Athletic can exploit a high defensive line through sheer pace and power.
