Tavares, provide width but must track back to maintain the five man line. A. Marusic acts as a defensive wing back to protect the right flank, while N. Tavares pushes up to provide more energy on the left.

A four man midfield sits in front of the defensive line to manage the central spaces. M. Guendouzi plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Alongside him, M. Zaccagni and G. Isaksen operate in the half spaces to connect the lines. F. Dele-Bashiru provides extra cover to ensure the midfield remains dense. M. Guendouzi uses his high pressing intensity to disrupt play, while the other midfielders work to recycle possession and move the ball forward.

The attacking phase focuses on T. Castellanos as a lone striker. He acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and try to win the ball high up the pitch. When Lazio wins possession, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition. N. Tavares and A. Marusic can push up to offer width, allowing T. Castellanos to find the feet of the striker or work in combinations. The wingers will look to cut inside to create space for the wing backs to overlap.

One major advantage for Lazio is the compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle. Another strength is the ability to use the width of N. Tavares and A. Marusic to stretch the defence during a quick break. By staying narrow in the middle, the team can easily shift to cover the ball and deny the turn to attackers.

This 5-4-1 formation is built to frustrate teams that want to dominate possession. It is best suited for matches against heavy favorites where Lazio can sit deep and counter at pace.
