Valencia Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Julen Agirrezabala · César Tárrega · José Copete · José Gayà · Dimitri Foulquier · Javi Guerra · Pepelu · Diego López · Arnaut Danjuma · Hugo Duro · Lucas BeltránValencia seeks to control games through a dense mid-block and quick transitions using a 4-5-1. This formation focuses on staying compact to deny space in the central areas while preparing to strike when the opposition loses the ball. The lineup relies on a disciplined unit that can sit deep and then move forward with purpose.
Julen Agirrezabala starts between the posts to organize the defensive line. A flat back four provides the foundation, with José Copete and César Tárrega acting as the central defenders. César Tárrega uses his aerial strength to defend set pieces, while José Copete provides cover to sweep behind the line. On the flanks, José Gayà acts as an attacking full back to provide width, whereas Dimitri Foulquier plays a more defensive role to help secure the right side. The unit works together to hold a compact shape and force the play into wide areas.
The midfield functions as a five man block designed to squeeze the space between the lines. Pepelu sits as the deep lying playmaker to shield the defence and recycle possession. Next to him, Javi Guerra acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and break the line. Lucas Beltrán and Diego López work in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Arnaut Danjuma provides more verticality from the right side of the midfield. This group works to win the second ball and immediately look to spread wide once the ball is recovered.
In the final third, Hugo Duro operates as a lone pressing centre forward. He works to pin the last defender and make runs in behind to stretch the defence. The attacking play is built around him receiving the ball and laying it off to oncoming runners. When the team moves into transition, the wingers and midfielders push up to support him, creating combinations to get to the byline. The goal is to use the movement of the wide players to create space for Hugo Duro to find the feet of the striker or finish a cross.
Valencia gains a significant advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield. By packing the center, the team can press in a mid-block and force a long ball from the opposition. The ability to shift between a compact defensive unit and a rapid counter attack allows the team to exploit gaps left by attacking opponents. This creates many opportunities to isolate wide players in one on one situations once the midfield has bypassed the opposition press.
This 4-5-1 formation is built to frustrate teams that rely on heavy possession. It is best suited for matches against dominant opponents where the goal is to defend deep and hit in behind on the transition.
