Milan aims to play a direct, counter attacking style of football built on a solid defensive base and rapid transitions. This 5-3-2 formation is designed to sit deep and soak up pressure before hitting the opposition with speed. The team relies on defensive compactness to force long balls and then uses the pace of their forwards to punish mistakes.

Mike Maignan operates between the posts to organize the defensive line and sweep behind the back three. The defensive unit employs a back three consisting of Modric, De Winter, and Pavlovic who primarily defend zonally. Modric acts as the central anchor to win the second ball, while De Winter and Pavlovic provide cover and physicality. The wing backs, Tomori and Estupinian, are tasked with providing the width for Milan. Tomori pushes high to overlap the winger, whereas Estupinian covers the entire left flank to support the attack and track back when possession is lost.

A three man midfield provides the engine for the team. Youssouf Fofana and A. Rabiot operate as a double pivot to shield the defence and protect the central area. Fofana uses his physicality to intercept passes, while A. Rabiot drives forward with the ball to link the lines. Pulisic plays as an attacking ten in the hole, occupying the half spaces to create chances. He acts as the creative link, receiving the ball from the pivot to play through the lines and find the attackers.

The attacking front line uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Rafa Leao and Nkunku play as a duo, with Leao using his dribbling style to drive at defenders and Nkunku making runs in behind. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition back line. When Milan wins the ball, the wing backs, Tomori and Estupinian, push up to provide width, allowing the two strikers to stay central and combine in tight spaces or exploit the space created by the overlapping runs.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through its ability to defend in a low block and maintain compactness when defending. The presence of two strikers allows Milan to pin the last defender and prepare for quick transitions. Additionally, the overlapping runs from Tomori and Estupinian create wide overloads that force the opposition to pull players out of position.
