Starting Lineup
IVERSEN 90% (Walton/Cornell) · SMALL 80% (Brady/Vukcevic) · VALENTIN 50% (Potts) · HUGHES 50% · GIBSON 80% (Lindsay) · STOREY 50% (Offiah) · ARMSTRONG 50% (Whiteman) · DEVINE 50% (Frokjaer/Carroll) · MCCANN 50% (Thordarson/Thompson) · OSMAJIC 80% (Smith) · DOBBIN 60% (Jebbison/Keane)Preston aims to control the central areas of the pitch through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup relies on a strong central presence to dominate games and win the second ball. By concentrating players in the middle, the team seeks to compress the space and control the tempo of play.
In goal, Iversen acts as the last line of defense. The back three consists of Gibson, Storey, and Hughes, who work together to hold a high line and defend zonally. Gibson acts as the central figure to sweep behind the others, while Storey and Hughes provide cover on the flanks. This defensive unit functions to protect the area in front of the goal and ensure the team stays compact when the opposition tries to move through the middle.
The midfield is a heavy engine room featuring a double pivot of Armstrong and Valentin to shield the defense. They sit in front of the back three to intercept passes and protect the center. Moving forward, Small and McCann operate as two central midfielders to connect the lines and drive forward with the ball. Devine plays in the hole as an attacking ten, looking to play through the lines and find gaps in the opposition defense. This midfield group is designed to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition into attack.
Up front, Preston utilizes two forwards in a partnership of Dobbin and Osmajic. Dobbin often looks to make runs in behind the defense, while Osmajic works to hold up the ball and link up play with the advancing midfielders. The attack uses these combinations to stretch the defense, either through quick passing or by allowing the midfielders to arrive late into the box. They press from the front to force a long ball and regain possession quickly in advanced areas.
One major strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to dominate possession and control the center. The presence of five players in the middle makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Another advantage is the ability to press in a mid-block, squeezing the space between the defensive and attacking units to catch teams on the transition.
This 3-5-2 formation provides Preston with a robust central block and strong attacking combinations. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that try to play through the middle of the pitch.
