Starting Lineup
IVERSEN 90% (Walton/Cornell) · SMALL 80% (Brady/Vukcevic) · VALENTIN 50% (Potts) · HUGHES 50% · GIBSON 80% (Lindsay) · STOREY 50% (Offiah) · ARMSTRONG 50% (Whiteman) · DEVINE 50% (Frokjaer/Carroll) · MCCANN 50% (Thordarson/Thompson) · OSMAJIC 80% (Smith) · DOBBIN 60% (Jebbison/Keane)Preston focuses on a direct and high intensity style of play through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the central midfield to drive into the final third. The team is built to use power and verticality to catch opponents out of position.
In goal, Iversen acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit functions as a back three with Storey acting as the right centre-back. Hughes plays as the left centre-back, while Gibson holds the middle. This back three stays compact to protect the central area. The defenders are expected to win the second ball and clear the lines when the opposition pushes high.
The midfield is a crowded engine room that uses a five man line to control the center of the pitch. Armstrong sits as the single pivot to shield the defense and pick up runners. Small and McCann work to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Small looking to drive forward with the ball. Valentin operates in the half spaces to support the transition. Devine plays as the attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the attackers.
The attacking front line uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Osmajic plays as the right striker, often acting as a target man to hold up the ball. Dobbin operates as the left striker, looking to make runs in behind the opposition back line. They work to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The two attackers combine in tight spaces to create chances or use the wide players to switch play.
Preston offers a significant tactical advantage through numerical superiority in midfield. This setup allows them to compress the midfield and make it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The team can also use the speed of transition to hit opponents in behind once Armstrong or Small win possession.
This 3-5-2 formation provides Preston with a solid base to defend zonally and strike quickly. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
