Starting Lineup
IVERSEN 90% (Walton/Cornell) · SMALL 80% (Brady/Vukcevic) · VALENTIN 50% (Potts) · HUGHES 50% · GIBSON 80% (Lindsay) · STOREY 50% (Offiah) · ARMSTRONG 60% (Whiteman) · DEVINE 50% (Frokjaer/Carroll) · MCCANN 60% (Thordarson/Thompson) · OSMAJIC 80% (Smith) · DOBBIN 60% (Jebbison/Keane)Preston aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with verticality using a 3-5-2. This formation relies on a compact middle to force opponents into wide areas and uses quick transitions to hurt teams on the break. The lineup is built to control the central zones and use the physical presence of the strikers to progress the play.
In goal, Iversen acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Hughes, Storey, and Gibson. Gibson acts as the central defender to clear the lines and win the header during set pieces. Storey and Hughes sit on either side to cover the space and defend zonally. When the team plays a high line, these defenders must be ready to step up and catch runners.
The midfield is a busy five man unit that seeks to compress the midfield and win the second ball. Armstrong sits in a single pivot role to shield the defense and recycle possession. Small and McCann work alongside him to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with McCann often looking to drive forward with the ball. Valentin provides additional cover while Devine operates in the hole to create from deep and find the feet of the striker. This midfield group works to intercept passes and ensure the team maintains a compact shape.
Up front, Preston utilizes a two man partnership of Dobbin and Osmajic. Dobbin often plays as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front and disrupt the opposition build up. Osmajic acts as the partner to hold up the ball and allow Dobbin to make runs in behind. They work in combinations to pull defenders out of position, often looking for a through ball to split the defence. The attacking unit is designed to exploit the space left behind a high defensive line through quick combinations.
This formation offers Preston significant advantages in central areas. The presence of five players in the middle creates numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the back three provides extra security when defending against lone strikers, allowing the wide midfielders to push higher. The team can also shift quickly from a mid-block to a high press to force a long ball from the opposition.
The 3-5-2 provides Preston with a solid base for both defensive stability and rapid counter attacks. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that play with a lot of possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
