Millwall Football Formation
Starting Lineup
JENSEN 90% (Benda/Crocombe) · IVANOVIC 90% · BALLO 50% (Azeez/Cundle/Emakhu) · NEGHLI 70% (Bangura-Williams) · DOUGHTY 90% (Bryan/Sturge) · COOPER 90% (Grant) · CRAMA 90% (Taylor) · LEONARD 50% (McNamara/Harding) · DE NORRE 90% (Mazou-Sacko/Kelly) · SMALLBONE 60% (Luongo/Mitchell) · COBURN 70% (Langstaff)Millwall focus on a direct, high-intensity style of play with this 2-4-4 formation. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opposition quickly through vertical passes. This lineup is built to overwhelm the other side with numbers in both the midfield and the attacking line.
JENSEN stays between the posts to manage the defense. The back line consists of a pair of central defenders, COOPER and CRAMA, who must act as the primary shield for the goalkeeper. Because there are only two defenders, they often play a high line to squeeze the space and press the opposition. They need to be ready to cover ground and intercept long balls that bypass the initial press.
The midfield consists of a four man unit designed to control the center and provide width. DE NORRE and SMALLBONE work in the center to win the second ball and move the play forward. DE NORRE drives forward with the ball to connect the defense to the attack, while SMALLBONE helps to protect the central area. On the flanks, LEONARD and DOUGHTY push up to provide width and support the forwards. This central pairing of DE NORRE and SMALLBONE acts as the engine that allows Millwall to transition from defense to attack.
The attack is extremely aggressive with four players positioned high up the pitch. COBURN and IVANOVIC operate as two center forwards, looking to use their physical presence to pin the last defender. BALLO and NEGHLI play as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances. This front four can press the opposition back line in pairs, forcing errors and creating chances in transition. The movement of COBURN and IVANOVIC allows the wingers to find space in the channels.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having four attackers and four midfielders, Millwall can create massive pressure in the opponent half to win it back high up the pitch. The team also creates wide overloads when LEONARD and DOUGHTY push up to join the wingers, making it difficult for the opposition to defend the flanks.
Millwall utilizes this aggressive 2-4-4 to force errors and strike with speed. It is a formation best suited for games where the team needs to dominate through physical intensity and quick transitions.
