This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition in their own half by committing many players forward to win the ball back high up the pitch. The intent is to force errors in the opponent's defensive third and exploit the resulting chaos through rapid vertical movements.
Toth operates between the posts to manage the high line. The defensive unit relies on a narrow pair of central defenders, McLoughlin and Miller, who must step up to intercept long balls and act as ball playing defenders. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be ready to defend large spaces if the press is bypassed. This back two must stay compact to prevent the opponent from playing through the center, often relying on the midfield to squeeze the space in front of them.
The midfield acts as the engine of the Blackburn lineup, utilizing five players to control the middle of the pitch. Cantwell plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the lines and find passes between the lines. In the central areas, Tronstad and Tavares work to protect the two defenders and win the second ball. Ribeiro and Alebiosu occupy the wide areas, acting as wide midfielders who can track back to help the defense or push high to support the attack. This five man block allows the team to dominate the center and spread wide when needed.
The attack features a front three designed to pin the last defender and create constant pressure. Ohashi operates as a central striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. On the flanks, Kargbo and Morishita act as wide attackers who can cut inside to create overloads in the half spaces. This front line works in combinations to create runs in behind or allow for cutbacks from the byline. The goal is to isolate defenders in one on one situations by using the width provided by the wide midfielders and the forwards.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having five midfielders and three attackers, the team can create numerical superiority in the attacking third to overwhelm the opposition. Blackburn can also achieve quick speed of transition once the ball is won, moving the ball from the midfield to the front three in just a few passes.
This 2-5-3 formation is built for a high intensity game where the team seeks to dominate possession and territory. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
