Starting Lineup
TOTH 90% (Michalski/Goddard) · OHASHI 70% (Gueye/Gudjohnsen) · RIBEIRO 90% (Pickering) · ALEBIOSU 60% (Gardner-Hickman) · MCLOUGHLIN 80% (Wharton) · MILLER 90% (Carter) · KARGBO 50% (De Neve) · MORISHITA 50% (Hedges) · TRONSTAD 90% (Montgomery) · TAVARES 50% (Baradji/Forshaw) · CANTWELL 90% (Henriksson/Tyjon)Blackburn plays a direct style of football built for rapid transitions using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup focuses on overwhelming the opposition in the final third by committing many players forward. The goal is to win the ball and move quickly to exploit gaps in the opponent defensive line.
Toth starts between the posts to oversee the defensive unit. The defense relies on a two man back line consisting of Mclaughlin and Miller. These central defenders must be ready to cover large spaces when the team pushes up. Miller and Mclaughlin act as the last line of defense, needing to be strong in the air and quick to track back when the ball is lost.
The midfield works in a four man block to control the center and provide width. Tronstad and Tavares operate in the central roles to connect the defense to the attack. Tronstad works to drive forward with the ball while Tavares helps to shield the two center backs. On the flanks, Ribeiro and Alebiosu provide the necessary width to stretch the opposition. Ribeiro pushes up to support the attack while Alebiosu looks to overlap and provide crosses.
The attacking unit is very heavy with four players positioned high up the pitch. Cantwell and Ohashi act as a strike partnership in the center. Cantwell works to hold up the ball and link with the midfield, while Ohashi looks to run in behind the defense. On the wings, Kargbo and Morishita stay wide to pull defenders out of position. Kargbo and Morishita look to cut inside or deliver crosses to the two central forwards to create goal scoring chances.
Blackburn gains a massive advantage through wide overloads when the wingers and wide midfielders combine. The formation also allows for high pressing in waves because of the number of players positioned in the opponent half. By committing so many bodies forward, the team can quickly isolate defenders in one on one situations during a transition.
This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system built for aggressive attacking. It is best suited for games where Blackburn needs to break down a deep defensive block through sheer numbers.
