Stoke aim to control matches through a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the central areas and overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the middle third. By stacking the center, Stoke can control the tempo of the game and dictate where the play moves.

Johansson sits between the posts to provide a foundation for the defense. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Wilmot and Phillips, who must be extremely disciplined. Because there are only two defenders, Wilmot and Phillips act as the primary cover, often needing to sweep behind a high line or step up to intercept passes. This small unit requires intense communication to manage space against counter attacks.

The midfield is where the real power of the Stoke formation resides. Seko acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of him, Tchamadeu and Cresswell operate as the central engines, with Tchamadeu driving forward with the ball while Cresswell looks to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Baker and Junho occupy the half spaces as attacking midfielders, providing extra passing lanes and the ability to arrive late into the box. This five man unit allows the team to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. Mubama leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and provide a focal point. On the flanks, Thomas and Manhoef act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the defense. This positioning allows the midfielders to exploit the gaps created by the width, using the wingers to pull defenders out of position before Thomas or Manhoef look to cut inside and attack the near post.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the center. The ability to press in coordinated waves from the front five creates constant pressure on the ball carrier. Furthermore, the wide positioning of the attackers combined with the energy of the midfielders allows the team to create quick transitions and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

The 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward setup that relies on intense central dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession against a side that sits deep in a low block.
