GRIFFITHS 90% (Wildsmith) · STYLES 90% (Taylor) · GILCHRIST 70% (Williams) · CAMPBELL 50% (Mepham) · PHILLIPS 70% (Bielik) · MOWATT 90% · MOLUMBY 50% (Collyer/Diakite) · HEGGEBO 50% (Josh Maja/Dike) · PRICE 90% · GRANT 50% (Johnston) · ILING-JR. 90% (Wallace)West Brom rely on high intensity and direct verticality with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and catch opponents before they can settle. The intent is to create chaos in the opposition half by flooding the central areas and utilizing the width of the pitch to stretch the defense.
Griffiths operates between the posts to guard the goal. Ahead of him, the defensive unit uses a narrow two man line consisting of Campbell and Phillips. These central defenders must be prepared to step up to squeeze the space and play out from the back when needed. Because the formation uses only two players in the deep line, Campbell and Phillips must be ready to cover large areas and win the second ball if the initial press is bypassed.
The midfield is a massive engine designed to dominate the center of the pitch. Molumby sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Beside him, Gilchrist and Styles act as central midfielders who drive forward with the ball to link the lines. Mowatt and Price operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders, tasked to press aggressively and find ways to play through the lines. This five man unit allows West Brom to maintain control and ensure they always have players available to pick up runners.
Up front, the attack consists of three players looking to pin the last defender. Heggebo acts as the central presence to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. On the flanks, Grant and Iling-JR. work as wide attackers who can either pull wide to spread the defense or cut inside to create goal scoring chances. This attacking group moves in combinations to create runs in behind, often looking to deliver early crosses or play one-two passes to break the opposition block.
A major advantage for West Brom is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield. By using five players in the center, they can easily overwhelm a standard three man midfield and win the second ball. The formation also allows for high pressing in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. The spacing between the wide attackers and the midfield provides many options to switch play and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system focused on aggressive pressing and rapid transitions. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and overwhelm an opponent that plays with a deep defensive block.
