Brisbane Roar Soccer Formation
Starting Lineup
Jay · Tony · Dane · Ryan · Ben · Scott · Josh · Arnie · Gatty · Ziggy · ChrisBrisbane Roar aims to play a defensively solid game built on a low block and quick transitions. This is a 5-4-1 formation that prioritizes compactness to deny space between the lines. The team works to stay narrow and wait for the right moment to hit the opposition in behind.
Chris stays between the posts to manage the defensive unit from deep. The back line consists of a back five where Gatty, Josh, and Scott form the central core. Scott and Josh act as the central defenders to win the second ball and cover space, while Gatty provides a presence in the middle. Arnie operates as a right wing back to provide width, while Ziggy acts as the left wing back to help defend the flank and push up the pitch when needed. The unit works to hold a low block and keep the lines close together.
The midfield is a flat four that works to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. Ben and Ryan operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and win back possession. Ben helps to protect the area in front of the center backs, while Ryan looks to carry the ball forward to connect the lines. Tony and Dane play in the half spaces as attacking midfielders. Tony and Dane press to win the ball high when the opposition tries to play through the thirds and they provide the link to the attack.
Brisbane Roar utilizes a lone striker in Jay to lead the line. Jay acts as a pressing center forward to force a long ball from the opposition defense. The attack relies on the wing backs, Arnie and Ziggy, to provide width and deliver crosses when the team breaks quickly. Tony and Dane look to arrive late into the box to support the lone striker. The plan is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defense and create chances through combination play in the final third.
This formation offers significant advantages in terms of compactness when defending. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. Another strength is the ability to transition from a deep block to an attacking move through the overlapping runs of Arnie and Ziggy. This creates a numerical advantage in wide areas during the counter attack.
The Brisbane Roar lineup is designed to be difficult to break down by sitting deep and forcing the opponent wide. This 5-4-1 setup is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined defensive performance.
