Peñarol focuses on a hard to beat identity using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and use the directness of two strikers to hit teams in transition. The goal is to maintain a compact defensive unit and then launch rapid attacks once the ball is won back.

G. Buffon stays between the posts to organize the defense. The back line consists of a central trio where F. Redondo acts as the anchor, while A. Nesta and F. de Boer occupy the right and left spots of the central block. The wide roles are filled by attacking wing backs P. Maldini (C) and G. Zambrotta, who are expected to provide width and run to the byline. P. Maldini (C) uses his reading of the game to cover space, while G. Zambrotta pushes up to overlap when the team has the ball. The unit defends zonally to keep the space between the lines small.

A three-man midfield provides the engine for the Peñarol system. E. Davids plays as an aggressive presence in the left central role to press and win the ball high up the pitch. R. Keane sits in the right central spot to shield the defense and disrupt opposition play. Z. Zidane operates as the advanced tip, acting as the main creator to connect the midfield to the front two. He uses his passing range to find the attackers and can carry the ball forward to break the lines. This trio ensures the team can recycle possession or quickly transition from defense to attack.

The attack relies on a two-man partnership of R. Baggio and G. Batistuta. G. Batistuta acts as the primary target man, using his aerial strength to win the header and hold up the ball. R. Baggio plays as a second striker in the hole, dropping deeper to link play and find space between the lines. The team builds attacks by playing short from the back to the wing backs or by playing direct to the strikers. When the ball moves forward, the wing backs push high to create wide overloads, allowing the strikers to focus on runs in behind.

This formation offers significant advantages in defensive stability and counter attacking. The three central defenders and three midfielders create a compact shape that is very difficult to play through. The presence of two high quality strikers allows for quick verticality. Peñarol can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents out when they commit too many players forward.

The 5-3-2 setup provides a balance of defensive solidity and attacking threat through two strikers. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
