The midfield functions as a three-man midfield with a carrier and creative elements. Onio and Poxmelator work to control the central area, with one often dropping to help the defenders while the other carries the ball forward. Ulqui plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to link the lines. Ulqui looks to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines to break the defensive block. This midfield group works to recycle possession and ensure the team can progress through the thirds.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Nero acts as the pressing centre-forward to lead the line and fight for the second ball. Ingus and Zoro operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring chances. Ingus and Zoro pull wide to create space before looking to cut inside into the half spaces. This movement allows Nero to find space in the box or receive the ball to hold it up for the late runners.

One major strength of this Japan lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front three and Ulqui trigger a press to win the ball back high up the pitch. Another advantage is the width provided by the wingers, which allows the team to switch play and isolate wide players in one on one situations. The team also benefits from the ability to combine in tight spaces in the final third.
