Starting Lineup

Chelsea aims to dominate through constant pressure and direct verticality. The team operates in a 4-2-4 formation that is designed to squeeze the pitch and hunt for the ball in the opponent territory. This lineup is built to play a high pressing game, looking to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition while they are out of position.

PIRIZ acts as the last line of defence in goal. The defensive unit consists of a flat back four with OJEDA at right back and PENAYO at left back. CADILLAC and BAEZ form the central pair, tasked with holding the line and defending zonally. While OJEDA and PENAYO often push forward to overlap the wingers, CADILLAC and BAEZ must stay compact to cover the space. They need to communicate well to set the offside trap and manage the distance between the defenders.

In the middle of the pitch, VILLORDO and CAYETA form a double pivot. Their primary job is to shield the defence and provide a link between the back four and the front four. VILLORDO often drops deep to receive the ball from the centre backs, helping to recycle possession. CAYETA is tasked to carry the ball forward and break the line with vertical passes. They must work tirelessly to press in a mid block if the first wave of the attack is bypassed, ensuring the opposition cannot easily play through the lines.

The attacking unit is heavy with four players across the front. RODA and CACERES lead the line as a strike partnership, using their movement to pin the last defender. BAEZ and BILLORDO play as wide attackers to stretch the defence. BAEZ will frequently cut inside to create central threats, while BILLORDO works to get to the byline to deliver crosses. The goal is to create runs in behind and use quick combinations in tight spaces to penetrate the box.

One clear advantage for Chelsea is the ability to press in coordinated waves. With four forwards, the team can trigger a press from the front very effectively. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the lineup is already positioned high up the pitch to attack immediately upon winning the ball. This creates many one on one situations for the wingers and allows the strikers to find the feet of their teammates or exploit gaps in a retreating defence.

This 4-2-4 formation defines an aggressive identity centered on high intensity and attacking volume. The Blues are most effective when facing teams that attempt to play out from the back or those that lack the pace to handle quick transitions.
