Millwall focuses on a direct and vertical style of play within a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup seeks to overwhelm the opposition through heavy numbers in the middle and front of the pitch. The goal is to push the ball forward as quickly as possible to exploit gaps in the opponent.

In goal, JENSEN keeps watch over the defensive unit. The back line consists of a pair of central defenders, COOPER and CRAMA, who must hold a high line to squeeze the space. Because there are only two defenders, they must be dominant in the air and fast enough to cover any runs in behind. COOPER and CRAMA operate as a compact unit to protect the middle, often stepping up to intercept passes before the striker can turn.

The midfield quartet is built to control the center of the pitch and win the second ball. DE NORRE sits as a single pivot to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. Alongside him, SMALLBONE acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward. The two wide midfielders, LEONARD and DOUGHTY, occupy the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. LEONARD and DOUGHTY are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high and immediately look to break the line.

The attacking force is extremely aggressive with four players tasked to stretch the defense. COBURN and IVANOVIC work as a striking partnership in the center, often using their presence to hold up the ball or run in behind. On the flanks, AZEEZ and BALLO act as wide wingers who stay high to provide width. AZEEZ and BALLO aim to get to the byline and deliver crosses, while COBURN and IVANOVIC look to attack the near post or the far post.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch and in the final third. By using four midfielders and four attackers, Millwall can overwhelm opponents during a quick transition. The ability to press from the front in coordinated waves makes it difficult for the opposition to play out from the back.

This high risk, high reward formation relies on heavy pressing and quick forward movements. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to pin the opponent back and play through the lines with intensity.
