Norwich Football Formation
Starting Lineup
KOVACEVIC 90% (Grimshaw/Moulden) · CHRISENE 50% (Schlupp/Mahovo) · DARLING 90% (Cordoba) · MEDIC 90% (McConville/Duffy) · FISHER 60% (Stacey) · TOPIC 50% (McLean/Mattsson) · WRIGHT 50% (Slimane/Gibbs) · SARGENT 90% (Kvistgaarden) · DIALLO 90% · FORSON 50% (Schwartau/Emiliano) · CRNAC 50% (Jurasek/Makama)Norwich aims to play a highly vertical brand of football through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to catch opponents out of position by using aggressive numbers in the final third. The goal is to move the ball quickly from the back to the forwards to catch the opposition before they can settle.
In goal, KOVACEVIC acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit consists of a narrow two man line with DARLING and MEDIC. These two central defenders must be prepared to defend large amounts of space behind them as the team pushes high. MEDIC and DARLING act as the primary ball playing defenders to start attacks, while they also need to be dominant in the air to stop long balls. Because there are only two players in the back, they must coordinate well to cover the width of the pitch and prevent runners from slipping through.
The midfield is composed of a four man line that occupies the center and the flanks. CHRISENE operates on the left side while FISHER works on the right. In the center, TOPIC and WRIGHT form a pairing that tries to control the middle of the pitch. TOPIC and WRIGHT work to win the second ball and connect the defense to the attack. WRIGHT often drives forward with the ball to create chaos, while TOPIC works to shield the two defenders. This midfield line must press hard to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.
The attack uses four players to stretch the opposition defense. SARGENT and FORSON operate as two forwards in a partnership, often looking to run in behind the defensive line. DIALLO plays as an inverted winger on the left and cuts inside to create chances, while CRNAC stays wide on the right to provide width. SARGENT is known for his movement and ability to find space in the box. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This front four is designed to attack in combinations and use quick transitions to catch the defense off guard.
Norwich gains a massive advantage through the heavy numbers used in the attacking phase. By using a 2-4-4, the team can create wide overloads when the midfielders push high. They also possess great speed of transition because the players are already positioned far up the pitch. This allows the team to hit the opposition in behind very quickly once the ball is won.
This formation is built for a high risk high reward style of play. It is best suited for games where Norwich can exploit a slow opposition defense through direct attacking.
