In goal, Cumming acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a very high line consisting of only two central defenders, Davies and Helik. Helik uses his aerial strength to defend crosses, while Davies provides cover to sweep behind the high line. Because there are only two defenders, the unit must be extremely disciplined to prevent long balls from bypassing them.

The midfield acts as the engine room of Oxford United. A central pairing of Brannagan and De Keersmaecker occupies the middle of the pitch to control the tempo and recycle possession. Brannagan works to drive forward with the ball and break the line with his passing range, while De Keersmaecker looks to win the second ball. On the flanks, Spencer and Leigh operate as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width to stretch the defense. They must track back constantly to support the two defenders when the team loses the ball.

The attacking front line is heavy and designed to pin the opposition defenders. Krastev and Lankshear lead the charge as two forwards in a partnership, working to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. They are supported by two wide attackers, Goodrham and L.Harris, who operate as inverted wingers. Goodrham and L.Harris look to cut inside to create space for Spencer and Leigh to overlap. This heavy presence in the final third forces the opposition to drop deep into a low block.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the attacking zones. By pushing Spencer and Leigh high, Oxford United can often overwhelm the opposition full backs. The team also benefits from a high press, as the four attackers can trigger a press immediately to win the ball high up the pitch.
