Starting Lineup

Raum · Haidara · Lukeba · Orban · Werner · Nusa · Baumgartner · Bakayoko · Schlager · Seiwald · Gulacsi

RB Leipzig plays a highly vertical game of high intensity. The team uses a 2-5-3 formation to dominate territory and force mistakes. This lineup is built to press from the front and strike quickly once the ball is won.

Gulacsi acts as the last line of defense. The back line consists of two central defenders, Lukeba and Orban, who play in a high line. These two must be able to play out from the back and cover large areas of space if the team is caught out. They must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept passes to maintain the high press. The defensive unit functions as a tight block that moves up with the midfield.

The midfield is a five man unit that controls the center of the pitch. Seiwald and Raum work as a double pivot to shield the two defenders. Schlager and Haidara act as two central midfielders who drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball high. Baumgartner plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the lines. This midfield group is responsible to recycle possession and find ways to play through the lines.

The attacking front three provides constant pressure on the opposition back line. Nusa and Bakayoko act as wide wingers who can cut inside or stretch the defence by pulling wide. Werner operates as a pressing centre forward, using his explosive pace to make runs in behind. The team attacks in transition, looking to hit in behind using the movement of the front three. This creates many opportunities for cutbacks from the byline and runs into the box.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the middle allows RB Leipzig to squeeze the space and win the second ball easily. The team also creates wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the attackers. This ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for the opposition to play short from the back.

The 2-5-3 formation is a bold way to play that relies on aggressive pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play under pressure and leave space behind their midfield.
