Starting Lineup

Sava · Drăgușin · Ghiță · Matei Ilie · Rațiu · Bancu · Șut · Stanciu · Dragomir · L. Munteanu · Bîrligea

Romania looks to control the tempo and dominate the middle of the pitch through a 3-6-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a heavy possession game that focuses on suffocating the opposition in their own half. By packing the center, the team intends to keep the ball and use short passing to move up the pitch.

Sava stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a back three with Ghiță acting as the central anchor. Matei Ilie and Drăgușin play as the wide centre-backs, where they must stay compact and cover the space behind the midfield. Drăgușin provides aerial strength and physical presence in the box, while Matei Ilie helps to play out from the back. This three man unit must stay disciplined to prevent long balls from breaking the line.

The midfield is a massive engine consisting of a three man base and three advanced players. Bancu, Șut, and Rațiu form a dense trio to shield the defence and recycle possession. Bancu works to pick up runners and maintain the rhythm, while Rațiu and Șut help to win the second ball and protect the central zone. Ahead of them, Stanciu, L. Munteanu, and Dragomir operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive line to the attack. Stanciu uses his passing range to find teammates, while Dragomir and L. Munteanu push high to support the forward.

Bîrligea leads the line as a lone striker, acting as the focal point for the attacking movements. The team builds the attack by using the wide players to spread the defence, but the primary goal is to play through the lines using the advanced midfielders. Bîrligea must hold up the ball to allow the three attacking midfielders to arrive late into the box. The wingers and midfielders look to create combinations in tight spaces to pull the opposition out of position.

Romania gains a clear advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield. This setup allows the team to compress the midfield and make it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. The coordination of the six midfielders helps the team win it back high up the pitch and maintain a high line. This creates constant pressure and forces the opposition into mistakes.

This 3-6-1 formation is designed for total control through ball retention and central dominance. It is best suited for games where Romania needs to dominate a side that sits deep in a low block.
