Starting Lineup

FC Utrecht looks to play a high tempo, vertical style of football using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through aggressive attacking numbers and quick transitions. The goal is to stretch the defence and create chances by playing direct and using the width of the pitch to pin back the opponent.

The defensive unit begins with the goalkeeper, who must remain alert to long balls played over the top. A flat back four forms the base of the defence, with Quim acting as the right back to provide stability. Maarten plays at left back to cover the wide areas. In the centre, Willem operates as a right centre back with the ability to cover space, while Fede/Manu sits as the left centre back to defend the central zone. This back four must hold the line and work together to defend zonally when the team is out of possession.

In the middle of the pitch, FC Utrecht uses a double pivot to manage the transition from defence to attack. Cedric and Gilles form this central pairing, tasked with protecting the back four and winning the second ball. Cedric works to shield the centre of the pitch, while Gilles acts as a carrier to move the ball forward into the attacking third. Their main job is to recycle possession and ensure the team is not caught out when the front four push high up the pitch.

The attacking force is spread wide and deep to maximize pressure on the opposition back line. Timo plays as a left winger who looks to cut inside and create space, while Evert occupies the right wing to stretch the play. Up front, Dali and Bas operate as a two-man partnership. Dali works to find the feet of the strikers and link play, while Bas acts as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition build up. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and exploit gaps through combination play.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push forward to support the wingers. The team can also press high in coordinated waves, using the four attackers to force a long ball from the opponent. By having such a high number of players in the final third, FC Utrecht can quickly win the ball back and attack in transition before the opposition can get into a defensive block.

This 4-2-4 formation prioritizes offensive output and aggressive pressing to dominate games. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a deep defence or punish an opponent that plays a high line.
