Starting Lineup

Independiente relies on a direct and balanced way of playing through a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup aims to stay compact and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The team looks to win the ball in the middle of the pitch and move quickly to the front line to catch the opponent out of position.

Rey (C) sits between the posts to organize the defensive line. A flat back four consists of Báez on the right and Costa on the left, while Laso and Barreto act as the central pair. Laso and Barreto must hold the line and defend zonally to prevent runners from getting through. The full backs, Báez and Costa, are tasked to push up when the ball is on the opposite side to provide width, but they must also track back to cover the space behind them.

The midfield works in two banks of four to control the central areas. Ortíz and Mullet form a central pairing where Ortíz looks to drive forward with the ball while Mullet works to shield the defence. They must win the second ball to keep the pressure on. On the flanks, Barcia and Vallejo provide the width, with Barcia operating as the left midfielder and Vallejo on the right. This unit connects the back line to the attack by recycling possession and finding the forwards.

In the final third, Independiente uses two forwards to pin the opposition defenders. Giménez and Cauteruccio operate as a strike partnership, working together to hold up the ball and create space. Giménez often looks to run in behind the defence, while Cauteruccio can act as a target man to win headers or lay it off for the midfielders. The wingers, Barcia and Vallejo, look to cross from wide areas or cut inside to create chances for the two strikers.

A major strength for Independiente is the compactness of the two banks of four, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team can also create wide overloads when Báez or Costa overlap the midfielders to double up on the wing. This allows the team to switch play quickly and find the strikers in isolated one on one situations.
