The defensive unit works as a compact block to deny space between the lines.

The midfield consists of a central pairing with Manu Koné and Cristante working to control the middle. Manu Koné uses his physical presence to drive forward with the ball, while Cristante works to shield the defence and win the second ball. On the flanks, Angeliño and Rensch act as attacking wing backs to provide constant width. Angeliño pushes up to deliver crosses, while Rensch helps to recycle possession and provide an outlet on the right side.

Roma employs three attackers across the front line to pin the last defender. Ferguson acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball. On the wings, Dybala and Soulé play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. One major advantage for Roma is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the front three triggering the press to force a long ball.
