Starting Lineup

Castillo and Tapias operate as the wider centre-backs to cover the space out wide, while Campillo sits in the center to anchor the defense and win headers. This unit works to defend zonally, and the players are ready to step up to squeeze the space when the team presses high up the pitch.

The midfield uses a three-man midfield with a carrier in the deeper layer to shield the defense. Cotorro, Oso, and Ledezma work together to win the second ball and recycle possession. This group connects the back three to the attacking lines. Further up, Guti, Piojo, and Romo act as three attacking midfielders who play in the half-spaces to find ways to play through the lines. These players carry the ball forward and look to link the play to the lone striker.

Hormiga works as the lone striker to lead the attack. He focuses on his ability to hold up the ball and press the opposition back line to allow the other players to move into advanced positions. Behind him, Guti, Piojo, and Romo provide width and central presence by pulling wide or cutting inside. This creates opportunities for Hormiga to receive the ball in tight spaces or for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The team looks to combine in tight spaces to split the defense with a through ball.

A major advantage of this 3-6-1 lineup is the numerical superiority in the midfield. Having six players in the central areas makes it very difficult for opponents to keep the ball or pass through the center. The team can also press high in coordinated waves, using the closeness of the midfielders to trigger a press as soon as they lose possession. This ability to win it back high up the pitch keeps the pressure on the opposition.
