Starting Lineup

Böckle · D. Gugganig · Lawrence · Sulzbacher · V. Müller · Taferner · Hinterseer · Wels · T. Sabitzer · Anselm · Stejskal

WSG Tirol aims to play a high energy, vertical game using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents with a massive presence in the attacking third. The team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and move through the thirds with speed.

Stejskal acts as the lone goalkeeper to protect the goal. The defensive unit uses a very narrow back two with D. Gugganig and Lawrence playing as the central defenders. They must defend zonally and remain ready to cover each other when the opponent breaks. Because the team plays with only two defenders, they need to stay compact and force the opposition wide.

The midfield works as a central block using a double pivot to connect the lines. Böckle and Sulzbacher sit in front of the defense to shield the two center backs. Böckle will carry the ball forward to help move the play, while Sulzbacher works to win the second ball. Taferner and V. Müller operate as two attacking midfielders in the half-spaces. Taferner looks to find the feet of the striker, while V. Müller tries to arrive late into the box to score.

The attack uses four players to pin the last defender. Hinterseer and Anselm lead the line as two forwards in a partnership to hold up the ball and create space. Wels plays as a wide winger on the left to get to the byline and whip it in. T. Sabitzer operates on the right and will often cut inside to attack the near post. This front line works to stretch the defence and create constant runs in behind.

One major advantage of this WSG Tirol lineup is the ability to press in pairs from the front to force a long ball. The formation also creates wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. By using four attackers, the team can overwhelm a back four and create many one on one situations.

This 2-4-4 formation is a heavy attacking system designed for high intensity. It is best used when the team needs to chase a game or break down a compact opponent.
